"To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter. . .to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life." - John Burroughs

A timely quote
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences.” –C.S. Lewis”

Hi Janis - testing that this works! I have another great Geraldine Brooks book to add to your list. Have you read People of the Book? It traces an historic book through the ages and puts the reader right on the scene. I am currently reading Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. So far, I would highly recommend it as well.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading People of the Book now.
ReplyDeleteWho are you?

CS Lewis is one of the great thinkers of our time.....too bad I can't think of one currently in power.
